After Boeing, now Airbus struggles with quality problems: Turkish Airlines to ground 40 to 45 of its Airbus narrowbodies

Problems with passenger plane manufacturers continue. Boeing had to ground 737 MAX types due to quality control problems followed by software problem which caused crash of two units. There are allegedly software issues with Boeing’s widebody types as well.

While Boeing’s quality problems are on agenda, Airbus’ narrowbodies have also become a mattern of concern for the aviation sector.

Turkish Airlines has just announced that it will ground 40 to 45 of its Airbus narrowbodies by end of 2025. Currently, 20 narrowbodies are already grounded due to new required inspections of the jets’ Pratt & Whitney (P&W) PW1100G geared turbofans (GTFs).

According to flightglobal.com, P&W last year disclosed it was recalling thousands of GTFs, saying the engines might contain components subject to early failure due to defects introduced during a manufacturing process using powder metal. It has said an average of 350 jets will be grounded at any given time between 2024 and 2026 as a result.

Turkish Airlines also stated that it is still in talks with Boeing to give a major order for its long term fleet renewing plan. The flag carried had already finalized its order plan with Airbus, giving an order of 345 units.
