Spain Approves €2.6 Billion Deal for Turkish Hürjet Trainer Jets

In a significant boost to international defense cooperation, the Spanish government has approved a €2.6 billion procurement deal for 30 Hürjet advanced jet trainer aircraft from Türkiye.

The agreement, finalized between Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ) and Airbus Defence and Space España, marks the first major export success for the Hürjet, Türkiye’s indigenously developed supersonic trainer. Deliveries are slated to begin in 2028, with the aircraft set to enhance Spain’s pilot training capabilities at the Talavera la Real Air Base.

This move comes as Spain seeks to modernize its aging fleet of Northrop F-5 trainers, aligning with NATO standards for advanced fighter pilot instruction. The Hürjet, a single-engine, two-seat aircraft capable of light attack missions, features state-of-the-art systems including a glass cockpit, fly-by-wire controls, and compatibility with night vision and aerial refueling.

Under the partnership, Airbus will coordinate the integration of Spanish-specific systems, involving local firms to ensure technological adaptation and job creation. The deal includes not just the aircraft but also an integrated training ecosystem with simulators, AI-driven performance tools, and logistics support, projected to generate around 2,600 jobs in Spain over the coming years. This collaboration underscores the growing ties between Spanish and Turkish aerospace industries, with potential for future joint exports.

The approval highlights Spain’s commitment to bolstering its defense infrastructure amid evolving global security challenges. By opting for the cost-effective and versatile Hürjet, Spain aims to streamline training for its Eurofighter and F-35 pilots while fostering economic benefits through industrial participation. Analysts view this as a strategic pivot toward diversified procurement, reducing reliance on traditional suppliers and strengthening bilateral relations with Türkiye.
