Türkiye’s fertility rate alarming

According to TÜİK, Turkish statistics institute, Türkiye’s fertility rate fell to a historic low of 1.51 and remained below the replacement level fertility of 2.1 in 2023.

958.000 babies were born in Türkiye in 2023, decreasing the fertility rate to 1.51. Country’s fertility rate was 2.38 children in 2001, above the population’s replacement level of 2.10.

While the highest fertility rate was in southeastern cities, the lowest was recorded in western cities. Şanlıurfa had the highest fertility rate 3.27 children while Kütahya had lowest with 1.16 children.

Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had called Turkish people for years to have at least 3 children. While Erdoğan got harsh criticism from opposition, which claimed the president was seeing women as a creature only giving birth to children, statistics show that he was right in his call.
