Airbus might be in more trouble than Boeing

France-based aircraft manufacturer faces challenges due to engine problem. The airframer has been struggling with its NEO engines, namely GTF, produced by P&W.

According to aviation sources, Airbus’ A320 and A321 planes have serious problems with their engines. As per open source information, many Airbus planes powered with PW1100G-JM (GTF) engines, which are produced by Pratt&Whitney, have been grounded by airlines for repair and check.

One of the major problems with the PW1100G engine was related to the knife-edge seal in the High-Pressure Compressor (HPC) aft hub. This component experienced premature wear, resulting in unexpected engine shutdowns and airline operational disruptions. The second problem is concerns the contaminated metal in some of the engine’s parts, which could potentially lead to cracking.

It is claimed that at least 3000 engines have the said problem. While carriers and the producer company are aware of the problem and trying to take precautions, to what extent airlines consider the risk is a matter of question.

Moreover, it has been revealed that A220 types suffer from engine problems, too. Egypt Air has sold 12 A220 planes due to losses as the fleet became inactive owing to engine problems.

A320 Neo, A321 Neo and A220 are known types with having serious engine problems. Thousands of planes are grounded by airlines. Yet, said types have not had accidents.
