Between 5000 and 7500 Syrian migrants died during Kahramanmaraş earthquake

The twin earthquakes happening in Türkiye in February 6 caused thousands of deaths among Syrian migrants, too.

The Syrian population of the affected area reportedly comprises of  15% of the total population. Since migrants were living in poorer neighborhoods where houses consist of one or two floors, the death among them is estimated to be less. However, according Sinan Hatahet, a Syrian analyst, between 5000 and 7500 Syrians died during the earthquake. He added that around 1400 human remains were sent to Syria to be buried in hometowns of killed people. Yet, majority of killed people were buried in Türkiye, he says.

In total, 10% of death toll might be Syrian migrants. Meanwhile, Turkish Defense Ministry said that 40.000 migrants returned back to Syria after quakes.
