How Turkish opposition caused people to die in quakes by preventing urban renewal

Twin quakes in Türkiye’s Kahramanmaraş city have caused the death of more than 40.000 people. 98.5% of buildings collapsed were built before 1999, when the new regulations that forced contractors to build buildings compliant with strict rules became effective.

Ak Party-led governments tried to commence urban renewal but it was prevented by opposition parties. Videos show that opposition lawmakers led people to take streets and protest the government to stop the renewal. The government had to step back due to massive protests.

President Erdoğan has shown some of concerning videos to show opposition’s role for the death toll. He also blamed opposition politicians for being hypocritical as they impeded the urban renewal.

When Straturka contacted some opposition politicians, they did not comment on their role but blamed government for deaths.
