As per latest news, will lay off employees and close stores as part of a billion-dollar restructuring plan, CEO Brian Niccol said in a memo to employees Thursday, CBS News reported.
The company will cut 900 employees in non-retail positions in North America, according to Niccol. The store closures will represent a decrease of approximately 1% in the total number of Starbucks locations in North America this fiscal year, after taking into account some new openings, Niccol added.
“While we’re making good progress, there’s still much more to do to build a better, stronger, and more resilient Starbucks,” Niccol said.
Starbucks shares rose slightly in premarket trading following the announcement early Thursday morning.
Starbucks has faced declining sales in recent years as customers have grappled with a period of high inflation that has lasted for years, analysts previously told ABC News. The company has experienced six consecutive quarters of declining comparable sales, a metric that examines the performance of each location over time.
