NEW YORK, Nov 5 (Straturka) — Three of the world’s leading cities — New York, London and Rotterdam — are now governed by Muslim mayors, underscoring growing diversity in Western politics.
In New York, Zohran Mamdani, 34, was elected the city’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor after defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo in the 2025 election. Born in Uganda to Indian parents and raised in Queens, Mamdani campaigned on housing affordability and workers’ rights.
In London, Sadiq Khan secured a third term in 2024. The son of Pakistani immigrants, Khan has led the British capital since 2016 and is one of Europe’s most prominent Muslim politicians.
In the Netherlands, Ahmed Aboutaleb, who was born in Morocco, made history in 2009 as the first Muslim mayor of a major European city, Rotterdam. Known for his firm stance on integration, Aboutaleb announced plans to step down in 2024 after 15 years in office.
The presence of Muslim leaders in major Western cities reflects shifting demographics and growing acceptance of diverse backgrounds in political life.
