Türkiye to produce nuclear-powered submarines

The nuclear-powered submarine project, which will bring the Turkish Navy’s underwater capabilities to the highest level, has received its highly anticipated name. In the presentation given at the seminar at the Istanbul Naval Museum, this project was referred to as NÜKDEN.

After the Commander of the Turkish Naval Forces, Admiral Ercüment Tatlıoğlu, mentioned the goal of a nuclear submarine in an interview with Warships magazine, the name of this project has also become clear.

At the Naval Systems Seminar (DSS) held at the Istanbul Naval Museum, it was seen that this platform was named ‘NÜKDEN’ in the presentation on the national nuclear submarine project.

Turkey-based TurDef, which announces developments in the defense industry to its readers in English, announced a striking piece of information from the 12th Naval Systems Seminar held this year.

Submarine fleet commander Rear Admiral Timur Yılmaz, who attended the seminar, confirmed the information that the nuclear-powered submarine program will be called ‘NÜKDEN’, short for ‘Nuclear Propelled Submarine’.

Rear Admiral Yılmaz made the following note to the presentation given at the seminar:

“Having a nuclear submarine is a necessity considering our country’s security, deterrence, jurisdiction and interest areas and the activities to be carried out in these areas, and the support to be provided to the task groups in which our national aircraft carrier will participate.

In order to keep our institutional awareness of all nuclear submarine technologies and power transmission systems of the future high, studies are continuing and plans are being made.

After MİLDEN, it is considered important to focus on the issue together with all our national power elements from today onwards in order to realize our NUKDEN project in the short term.”

A MEDIUM-SIZED POWER WITH GLOBAL INFLUENCE…
The goal of operating national nuclear-propelled submarines represents a strategic leap in the Turkish naval inventory. According to Rear Admiral Timur Yılmaz, nuclear submarines, which can remain underwater continuously without any range limitation, will play a critical role in protecting the national aircraft carrier MUGEM and its task group from underwater in distant seas.

In an interview last month, Tatlıoğlu, the Commander of the Turkish Naval Forces, talked about the nuclear submarine as follows:

“It has been our national desire for 139 years to build a submarine whose design and construction process is completely under our own control, far from foreign dependence, and which meets all our operational needs.

Our expectation from the MİLDEN project is to minimize submarine dependency and develop indigenous-national systems. This activity will continue uninterruptedly at Gölcük Shipyard Command, which has been building submarines for nearly 50 years.

For this reason, we are protecting and developing our submarine base for future generations after the REİS class submarines.

In addition, we will take an important step towards the construction of NUCLEAR-POWERED SUBMARINES, which is essential for our long-term submarine deterrence capability and our vision of becoming a medium-sized power with global influence.

Once operational, we aim to export MİLDEN to friendly and allied countries based on national interests.”
