Not only does Turkiye not seek to destabilise the region by retaliating against Iran, but it is also completely against the US instrumentalising the Kurds in Iraq to open a military front on the ground.
Ankara plays a bigger role in preventing further escalation in the region than is widely believed or understood. Without Turkish approval of intervention, Azerbaijan will refrain from retaliation, despite Aliyev’s assertive discourse.
Apart from further destruction of the region, which translates into high costs for recovery, we also speak about a large number of refugees who will try to find shelter beyond Iranian borders.
Turkiye is already hosting about 3 million refugees, the large majority of whom are Syrians. Some estimates show that about 40 billion dollars were spend by Ankara to manage the refugee flows caused by the Syrian war.
With the existing social-economic shortcomings faced by the Turkish economy, engaging in an unwanted war, provoked by the US-Israel, is not in Ankara’s plans.
