Turkey

What is at the root of latest Turkey-Iran tensions?

In November 2024, HTS launched an offensive in the Aleppo countryside. This attack soon spread into an all-out war that toppled the Assad regime.

On December 8, after Assad fled, Iran, seeing that it had lost Syria for good, supported currents operating against its rival Turkey in order to destabilize the country. The PKK/YPG, with which they have long had good relations in Syria, was of course at the forefront.

With the new year, Turkey sent Iran dossiers containing evidence and warned it to abandon its hostile behavior, especially when steps began to be taken that also affected the field. However, when Iran exacerbated its behavior instead of correcting it, Turkey lost its patience and started to express this in the international arena and in the necessary places. These open warnings were actually the second step and had to be taken after Iran ignored the first step.

Leaving aside the political and diplomatic aspects of the process, if we count the hostile acts that directly concern my field (defense and security), there are three main issues:

*Iran sent proxy forces to Syria to support the PKK/YPG. These were identified by MIT in the field.

*Iran sent trainers to the PKK/YPG. In the first phase, it was determined that the trainers provided training especially on drones and air defense systems.

*Iran provided the PKK/YPG with drones and (as yet) a small number of air defense missiles. Using these, terrorists martyred SMO personnel and shot down some Turkish drones.
