Once refusing Syrian Sunnis to enter Türkiye, CHP MP now asks open-borders for pro-Assad Alevite militants

Following the end of the 61-year-old Assad regime in Syria, rebellions by regime remnants have begun. In the escalating tensions after regime supporters targeted security forces in Latakia and Tartus, there are many dead and wounded. While attention is drawn to sectarian provocations related to the incidents, statements made by **CHP (Republican People’s Party) Group Deputy Chairman Ali Mahir Başarır** in the past and present regarding **Syrians** have led to discussions about sectarianism.

**”OPEN A HUMANITARIAN CORRIDOR”**

**CHP Group Deputy Chairman Ali Mahir Başarır** made a speech to citizens in Hatay regarding the events in the Latakia region of Syria. In his statements, **Başarır** said that he was addressing all parties, chairmen, **Europe,** and the **United Nations,** stating that the bloodshed in Syria should be stopped and a humanitarian corridor should be opened to the region immediately.

Ali Mahir Başarır said, **”First of all, they will say ‘stop’ to this massacre, and in this process, a humanitarian corridor will be opened there. If these are not done, we will go to Latakia with our deputies. If it is death, it is death; it is better to die one day than to die every day, no problem at all.”**

**WHILE SUNNIS WERE BEING KILLED, HE WAS SAYING “LET TÜGVA MEMBERS GO TO WAR”**

However, the same Ali Mahir Başarır was doing politics in the CHP, saying **”What is our business in Syria?”** while hundreds of thousands of people were being brutally murdered by Bashar Assad during the 13-year Syrian civil war. While Sunni Muslims were being killed by Assad, Başarır was making statements such as, **”Let TÜGVA members who sing commando songs go to war in Syria. Do not take back to Turkey the refugees who visit Syria during the holidays.”**

While thousands of Muslims were being killed in Syria, CHP’s Başarır said that taking Syrians to Turkey was treason and that if the refugees were good people, they should stay in their country and fight. His reaction when it came to Alevi Syrians revealed the sectarianism in **CHP and Başarır**.

**SECTARIAN PROVOCATION FROM CHP’S TİRYAKİ AS WELL**

At the rally held in Hatay, CHP speakers lied that thousands of Alevis were killed and genocide was committed in Syria. In the rally organized by the CHP, which tried to provoke Alevis in Turkey through the events in Syria, **CHP Hatay Provincial Chairman Hakan Tiryaki** insulted **Syrian President Ahmed Şara.**

**HE CRITICIZED AK PARTY AND DEMANDED PROTECTION FROM ISRAEL**

Speaking in the Samandağ district of Hatay as an **’Alevi opinion leader,’** a person named Selim Narlı also described the security operations initiated to ensure order in the region after the attacks against the central government in the city of Latakia as an **”Alevi massacre”** and made statements against **Turkey.** Narlı also requested protection from Israel for the security of the region.

Narlı, who claimed to be the voice of the Alevis in Syria, said, **”Those there told me, ‘We want state protection. Our neighbor is Turkey. We do not have any problems with our Sunnis. We are brothers. We have been brothers until today, and we want to live as brothers from now on.’ They said, ‘Either they want state protection from Turkey or they demand state protection from Israel.'”**

**ÖMER ÇELİK HAD WARNED ABOUT SECTARIANISM**

AK Party Spokesperson Ömer Çelik had warned about sectarian provocation regarding the recent conflicts in Syria. Çelik said in a press conference held at the AK Party Adana Provincial Headquarters that they were closely following the events centered in **Tartus and Latakia** in Syria.

**Ömer Çelik made the following statements:**

*Our President approached the situation in Syria, which emerged with the massacres started by Assad, with an approach based on the security of Syria, and the most determined and loudest voice came from our President for the Ba’ath massacres to be announced more. The attack on the Syrian security forces that occurred in Latakia is a terrorist attack against the unity of Syria. Our most important motto is that Syria belongs to all Syrians. We reject the activities of turning Syria into a satellite state.*

**”THERE ARE SECTARIAN PROVOCATIONS IN SYRIA”**

**”THERE ARE SECTARIAN PROVOCATIONS IN SYRIA”**

*It is important for a picture to emerge with adherence to the law. It is important for inclusive management to emerge. The Syrian people want a free and civilized life. The international community should be on the side of the Syrian administration. Those who want to destabilize it want a collapsed state structure. Sectarian and ethnic provocations are being used. When we say Syria belongs to Syrians, we say that a structure should emerge in which all groups are safe, including all of them. Our President has emphasized his sensitivities on this issue, that everyone should be protected, and on the protection of the rights of minorities and women’s rights. Some civilian casualties occurred. We see that this is being tried to be reflected as a sectarian outburst towards our country as well. When we heard about the group that carried out this terrorist attack within 30 seconds, we immediately determined what the focus behind it could be. Turkey knows closely who is who. This attack is carried out by some forces that are remnants of the Assad regime, which are used to revive the Assad regime. The language used on social media should be careful. It is wrong to use language such as this is a Nusayri rebellion. We believe that all groups should not be mentioned together with terrorism. We approach these groups with a policy of brotherhood. Assad’s massacres cannot be attributed to the Nusayris. ISIS massacres cannot be attributed to the Sunnis either.*

**”POLITICAL SECTARIANISM IS A POISON”**

**”POLITICAL SECTARIANISM IS A POISON”**… *A terrorist is a terrorist, it has no origin, ethnicity or sect. When there is a massacre in Norway, we do not call it a Christian terrorist, but you keep calling it an Islamic terrorist. Islam and terror should not come together in any way. We do not look at the ethnicity or religion of the oppressed to protect them. The oppressed are the oppressed, whoever they are, they should be protected; the oppressor is also the oppressor, whoever they are, they should be opposed. This language is the language of those who are pursuing ugly projects in the region. We know very well who produces it and how it is put into political circulation. The sectarian affiliations of both our citizens and the people in the region are important. All of these are respectable, but political sectarianism is a poison. It builds religious walls between people. Those who read political events with a political sectarian language are making mistakes. We stated how wrong it was for Mr. Kılıçdaroğlu to use a sectarian language when defining himself. Now, here, criticisms are being made by the opposition towards our party and the People’s Alliance. A humanitarian sensitivity is emphasized regarding civilian casualties. These approaches are wrong. Sunni or Alevi, we do not see the targeting of any civilian as legitimate, we do not accept it. The basis of our regional policy is the policy of brotherhood. We see that political sectarian walls are being tried to be built between us. The Syrian administration’s warning to its security forces to be more sensitive about civilians while fighting terrorism is valuable. We believe that asymmetric groups and those who harm civilians by displaying some exaggerated actions will be punished. The Syrian administration and its presidents have clearly stated that what they have done is the fight against terrorism. We see how far the opposition is from understanding what is happening in Syria in some accusations against our President and our party.*

**”WE WILL NOT ALLOW INCITEMENT IN TURKEY”**

**”WE WILL NOT ALLOW INCITEMENT IN TURKEY”**

*The claim that Alevis are being ignored there is unscrupulous. Our sensitivity for all civilians is at the highest level. Turkey is the most sensitive country in protecting rights, and our President is the most sensitive leader.*

*They say they will seek refuge from Netanyahu. All of these are clear provocations. We are following them closely. All these calls are calls for international intervention. Those who carry out this terrorism are trying to ensure Israel’s intervention here.*

*Here, we will not allow any incitement in Turkey in any way. We will act uncompromisingly within the law. Our citizens can call themselves ethnically, religiously different, but our surname is Turkey. We are all members of one nation.*

*If any Alevi loses his life, that life is our life, if any Sunni loses his life, that life is our life. It is clear that those who seek help from Israel actually serve the projects of those who want to destabilize Syria with these terrorist acts. The brother of the Syrians is the Republic of Turkey. Our meetings are held with the motto Syria belongs to Syrians. We do not find it right to target a civilian unfairly. We find the Syrian administration’s sensitivity towards civilians important.*
