Turkey Overtakes Indonesia to Become World’s Largest Muslim Economy

ANKARA, Turkey – In a historic shift of economic power, Turkey has officially surpassed Indonesia to become the world’s largest economy among Muslim-majority nations, according to the latest GDP figures released today.

With a total output of $1.64 trillion**, Turkey now leads the Muslim world, narrowly edging out Indonesia’s **$1.54 trillion. Saudi Arabia follows in third place at $1.39 trillion, completing a top three that reflects a major realignment in global Islamic finance and trade.

The new rankings place Turkey at the pinnacle not only economically but also militarily, solidifying its position as the most powerful Muslim nation on both fronts. Analysts point to Turkey’s booming defense industry, coupled with sustained growth in manufacturing, construction, and exports, as key drivers behind the ascent.

“Turkey has successfully leveraged its strategic position, invested heavily in domestic defense production, and maintained resilient economic growth despite global headwinds,” said Dr. Mehmet Yilmaz, an economist at the Ankara Policy Institute. “This dual supremacy — economic and military — is unprecedented in the modern history of Muslim-majority nations.”

The full ranking of the largest Muslim-majority economies by GDP is as follows:

1. Turkey – $1.64 trillion

2. Indonesia – $1.54 trillion

3. Saudi Arabia – $1.39 trillion

4. UAE – $622 billion

5. Malaysia – $516 billion

6. Bangladesh – $511 billion

7. Egypt – ~$430 billion

8. Pakistan – ~$408 billion

9. Algeria – $317 billion

10. Iran – $300 billion

While Indonesia remains a close second, its slower post-pandemic recovery and reliance on commodity exports have allowed Turkey’s more diversified industrial base to take the lead. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia and the UAE continue to invest heavily in non-oil sectors, but neither has yet closed the gap with the top two.

Turkish officials celebrated the news, with the Ministry of Treasury and Finance issuing a statement calling the achievement “a testament to the country’s vision and resilience.” Opposition critics, however, caution that high inflation and currency volatility remain serious challenges.

Still, for now, the title of the Muslim world’s undisputed economic and military leader belongs to Ankara.
